The use of hashtags in Digital Marketing is something more than everyone knows, but do you know how to get the most out of your strategy? For this, we propose this guide so that you discover how to use hashtags in your Social Media strategy in an efficient way and thus obtain better results.
There are many questions that probably arise when you want to use hashtags in your Social Media strategy, right ?:
What hashtags to choose for my brand?
Where and how to use them?
How many should I place?
Where to find them?
The objective of the following post is to solve all these doubts and some more but, before getting into work, let’s review and define well what a hashtag is and its role in Digital Marketing.
What is a hashtag
Hashtags are data tags used in social networks to categorize and group certain content related to the same topic and thus facilitate searches related to similar publications.
These labels are represented by the symbol of the pad specialist email list, which is placed in front of each word or phrase so that it is possible to click on it and find all the content related to it.
Domain authority and page authority, does it matter for SEO?
Anyone who is dedicated to SEO knows and controls two metrics that are important within the art of positioning keywords: the DA and the PA, that is, the domain authority and the page authority.
Then, each time a user adds a hashtag to its publication, it can be indexed by the social network itself and can be found by other users when they click on that hashtag in any other publication they find. By doing so, they will access the page where all the contents containing the same hashtag appear.
Origin of the hashtags
The use of hashtags on social platforms has its origin in Twitter and dates from 2007.
Chris Messina, a former Google employee, is officially considered the first person to tweet using a hashtag.
Many other social networks, such as Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn and YouTube, added to this trend as they found in these labels a way to make it easier for users to find messages or related publications around specific topics.
Who could have imagined back then that the hashtags had come to stay and that they were going to take on such importance, right? And, without a doubt, hashtags have revolutionized social media marketing.
Hashtags have revolutionized #marketing in social networks. Why?

What is the role of hashtags in Digital Marketing?
Today, the saturation of content that is disseminated and shared on social networks is such that it is increasingly more and more difficult to attract the attention of our target audience.
For this reason, it is necessary to find a way that allows our content to reach the end users and it is precisely here where hashtags charge their greatest prominence. The use of hashtags in social networks is very important for small businesses and brands that want to give an “extra” visibility to their publications and help improve the results in their content strategy.
Why do you HAVE to use hashtags in your strategy?
Although, a priori, the use of hashtags may seem simple, only when they are used correctly will we be able to make a difference and allow users interested in our theme / product to find everything we publish about it. This is how we will have more possibilities to increase our visibility and impact.
But, including these labels within a social media strategy will allow us much more. Thanks to the use of these labels in our strategy we can:
Promote brand recognition
Increase the visibility of specific content
Help spread and promote events
Increase our community
Monitor our publications
Increase web traffic
Help spread promotions, product launches or campaigns / specific actions
Well, now that we have discovered the value of using social media hashtags, the question you are likely to ask is which hashtags to use and how to use them optimally. To solve these questions, I propose the following guidelines and tips for using hashtags to improve the strategy of your brand or business in the main social networks.
Posts with hashtags are much more likely to get interaction
How to use hashtags in Social Media
First of all, remember that each social network has its own specific characteristics so it is important to differentiate them well. However, although each social network has a specific way of showing content related to the same hashtag and its own algorithms work in different ways, there are a series of generic guidelines applicable to all platforms.
Regardless of whether you decide to resort to existing hashtags or choose to create your own hashtag, take note of the following basic guidelines for using them.
Basic guidelines for using social media hashtags:
Use hashtags short and easy to remember, avoid too long.
Do not overload your post with too many hashtags. The appropriate number of hashtags will depend on the social network you are on but, generally, publications that contain 1 to 3 hashtags have much more impact than those that use many.
Make sure you use hashtags that are very relevant to the content of your post.
Make sure that the hashtags you use are also relevant to your target audience.
Do not sin of original or creative and check that the hashtags you use are popular.
Try that the hashtags you choose are very, very specific. The audience that comes to you through them will be very akin to the content you share and the competition will be much lower.
Capitalize the first letter of each word, or the most important, of the hashtag to make it more readable: #Hashtags in Social Networks
Although no distinction is made between accented hashtags and those that do not, always opt for the correct orthographically correct version.
Use hashtags to “spy” your competition and detect interesting content related to your topic.
Remember that hashtags are “extrapolated” between social networks and others.
IMPORTANT: Although we recommend always choosing the orthographically correct version of the hashtag, bear in mind that in many tools the accents can give failures.
That said, discover how to use these powerful tags on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and Pinterest. Take note!
Use of hashtags on Twitter
As we have seen, using hashtags on Twitter can increase your engagement considerably. Of course, as long as you do not saturate your posts with them.
► One or two hashtags per publication is more than enough to achieve optimal results. If you also encourage participation in your tweet with a call to action that invites users to share, the impact could be even greater.
► Also allow other Twitter users to find your content when they search for the hashtags you use, you should not forget that you can also search for those same hashtags and detect interesting conversations in which to participate.
► If you want to get a “plus” in your reach, resort to popular hashtags or that are trending at that time. Remember that in the same application you have a section dedicated exclusively to it, the Trends column, where you can discover the famous Trending Topics, which are nothing more than the hashtags and / or terms that are being used the most at a certain moment and in a certain place within Twitter. How Trending Topics work?
Trending Topic are those keywords or hashtags (since they can carry “#” or not) which are being used in a specific time interval within Twitter. That is, they are the terms that are being talked about the most at a given moment within the social network and that turn into a trend.
These trends are determined based on an algorithm that is in charge of identifying in real time the hottest topics of the moment taking into account, mainly:
the number of different users that uses the hashtag or term
the increase in the number of users who use it
the retweets that include it
However, these factors are only some pillars that the algorithm takes into account when determining what is trend. It can also happen that there are several terms or hashtags related to the same topic and it is possible that the algorithm of Twitter will group them under oneself.
REMEMBER: Trends on Twitter correspond to terms that become popular at a specific time in front of topics that have been for a longer time. Therefore, you have to know how to take advantage of them and even better predict them in order to “get on the wave”, join the conversation and keep them from going out of style.
In order to take full advantage of these trends, prior planning is essential. It is true that there are events that can not be predicted but we can anticipate the special dates or events or popular events, globally or locally that are normally spoken.
You can get ahead of the Trending Topics with a good content planning #Twitter

► Create your publication calendar for Twitter and write down all those dates that are likely to become a trend and that you are interested in talking about. Of course, make sure that the topics you choose are relevant for both your target audience and your product or your sector.
► In addition, you can use external tools that can help you find those hashtags that are trending at any given time. Below I’ll leave a couple of them that can be useful.
See a very representative example of how CM Classroom used the # DayMundialdelRock in its Twitter strategy, where we took advantage of a very popular theme in the social network to promote interactions, increase visibility and humanize at the same time.Combine popular and specific hashtags of your niche with own hashtags, created by and for your brand, with which you can improve your branding and give visibility to a specific event, campaign or action.
► Use the platform’s own hashtags search engine and when you do, take note of the hashtags related to it to use them as well.
► Among the different hashtags you use, make sure you have hashtags related to:
The content of the publication
The sector to which the brand belongs
The niche or the target audience you’re targeting
The brand itself
► Do not forget your competition! Investigate which hashtags use brands similar to yours, how they do it and if they are having an effect. It is a very good way to inspire you and determine which of them could help you.
► Make a good list of hashtags (in an Excel document, for example) that meet the above requirements and start using them in your strategy.
Mr.Wonderful’s Instagram account is a good example of using hashtags. Here is an example:
EXTRA: Tools for hashtags on Instagram
To facilitate both the search and measurement of hashtags within the social network Instagram, I recommend two tools:
- Metricool: A complete tool with which you can monitor, measure and analyze the impact of the hashtags used. (Also valid for Twitter)
- RiteTag: This tool allows you to analyze the popularity of a particular hashtag and even get suggestions for hashtags for an image, text or keyword. You can keep an eye on the tool in its 7-day trial version.
- Hashtagify: Another very useful tool with which we can discover what are the main trends in the use of hashtags and hashtags related to them for our sector, our niche, etc. (Equally valid for Twiter).
Use of hashtags on Facebook
You have probably wondered if it really is necessary or help to use hashtags on Facebook, right?
The ultimate goal of using hashtags in your Facebook strategy is similar to that of Twitter and Instagram: Using them can help your publications achieve greater reach and engagement. However, due to the Edgerank algorithm, the operation is very different and, for this reason, you must pay close attention to how you use them.
Although since they were introduced in the platform in 2015 there has not been much information about the use of hashtags in the social network of Zuckerberg, yes we can be based on some basic guidelines and good practices that have proven to be effective. Therefore, before using hashtags “crazy” on Facebook, have the following tips.
How to use hashtags on Facebook:
► Unlike Twitter or Instagram, several studies have shown that using one or two hashtags (at most) generates much more engagement than using several of them. Less is more!
► Facebook also uses hashtags to group or categorize conversations between people around that same topic so you can use them to start conversations.
► Each hashtag used on Facebook has its own unique URL which allows traffic to that URL from other sites to activate the conversation.
► Create and use own hashtags to promote actions and / or specific campaigns.
► Use special dates or use newsjacking to share content related to current events or news and give visibility to your brand through them, provided they are interesting or have some consistency with your brand.
► Place the hashtag in the first 80 characters of your publications so that it is more likely to be seen.
► Use both the Facebook search engine and the search bar using the URL “www.facebook.com/hashtag/(hashtag that is)” to search for hashtags within the application and discover publications and conversations that might interest you. Remember that you will only find public profile posts or pages.
Take a look at this example of Classroom CM in which we take advantage of the # Day of the Writers, a special date in Spain, to increase the visibility of the brand and humanize it:Use of hashtags on LinkedIn
Although in the beginning it seemed that hashtags had no place in LinkedIn, recently these famous labels began to gain prominence within the social network.
Given the huge growth in the number of users that LinkedIn has been through since 2017, approximately, it has been necessary to find a way to organize, categorize and filter the contents published within it. To achieve this, there is no better way to do this than through the use of hashtags and LinkedIn wanted to apply.
How to find and follow hashtags on LinkedIn
Since relatively recently, hashtags on LinkedIn are clickable and “trackable” as in other social networks, and using them will also allow you to increase your reach and brand awareness within the social network. In addition, thanks to the new feature that allows you to track and monitor hashtags, you can reach users that are similar to your interests by disseminating your content and, of course, finding other content that may be of interest to you.
Until recently, in order to fully enjoy the use of hashtags and their tracking, we had to activate the profile in English and follow a series of steps:
Go to “Home” (Start) of your profile
Edit the “Communities” section in the lower left
Press “Get started” on the new tab
Access the hashtags search engine!
(UPDATE) But, this is no longer necessary. We can now search for hashtags on LinkedIn in Spanish!
Simply use the same search engine of the platform and enter the desired hashtags in it. In addition, you will see a new “content” option that will show you the publications that present such hashtags or search terms.
Are you still wondering if you use hashtags on LinkedIn? Without a doubt, the answer is yes. Take note of how to proceed to it.
How and where to use hashtags on LinkedIn
Unlike other social networks where we just include hashtags in the publications, on LinkedIn we have specifically 3 places where you must locate your hashtags to be truly effective:
► Use hashtags in your personal profile, especially in your extract and in the descriptions of your professional career. In doing so, follow the basic guidelines we discussed initially and try to make them specific and relevant to what you really want to be associated with or to what keywords you want to be found.
Ask yourself a question: What do you want to be associated with? And based on your answer, choose the keywords you will use for your brand.
► Includes hashtags in your status updates but without abuse. Remember that in this social network the use of hashtags is relatively recent and the user is not used to them so you can become saturated if you see too many. I advise you to use up to 4 hashtags per post, no more. Take a look at this example.
► Includes hashtags in your articles Press. This type of publication that reminds us so much of the entries in a blog is much more valuable than a “normal” publication in the eyes of our contacts and is finally indexable.
However, getting these articles to reach your target audience is a bit more complicated. Therefore, at this point, it is essential that you use hashtags related to the theme of your article and include them both in the body of it and in the publication that you write when you are going to share it. In this way you will help other users interested in these issues reach your content.
► Practice social listening, listen to what your community is talking about, monitor hashtags that interest you and detect new ones with the help of the powerful and “new” search engine that you just discovered.

Use of hashtags on YouTube
As happened with LinkedIn, YouTube, recently, began to give greater prominence to the use of hashtag within its platform, and for good reason. In fact, with the constant changes in the algorithm of Google the most normal thing was to wait for YouTube to do the same and be updated over the years.
This being the second largest search engine in the world, YouTube has a brutal database that does not stop growing which makes it necessary to find a way to optimize content searches within the platform as well as increase its visibility.
However, you should bear in mind that the operation of hashtags on YouTube is totally different from how they are used on other social networks.
How to use hashtags in YouTube videos
Unlike how they are used in the main social networks we have seen, on YouTube you should consider two places where you will have to locate the hashtags to get your videos to gain greater visibility and number of visits within the network.
