Manual sanctions from Google, yes, the worst nightmare for an SEO Specialist or a Webmaster. Today in Soy de Marketing we will focus on the manual sanctions of Google, showing solutions and some tips to reconsider a sanctioned page. Every so often our website is exposed to Google’s algorithm, something that can very negatively affect our position in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Page) and therefore, our conversion percentage. We know that many marketing blog have dealt with the issue of algorithmic sanctions but not so much about manual sanctions and their possible solutions.
Manual sanctions from Google
To begin, we will make a brief introduction for those who have less knowledge of SEO and are somewhat lost in this “organic positioning in search engines” (always gets search engines in the plural but really in Spain the pie is only distributed by Google).
Types of Sanctions
It is important to know that there are two types of sanctions that Google may apply to our website if we violate its webmaster guidelines.
The “spiders” of Google enter our page to read all our information and index the page to be able to update the data and show us in the program director email list. If our page has duplicate content (Panda *) or tries to falsify the results through fraudulent links to improve the ranking (Penguin *), Google will sanction us without prior notice.
In theory they carry this name because it is supposed to be done by a person and not by Google’s algorithm, something that is not entirely true. Generally these sanctions occur because our website is denounced (for example by the competition) or for having done something too loud for Google, thus making all its alarms jump.
Sanctions for duplicate content
- Panda is the name that has the algorithm of Google that is responsible for sanctioning the duplicate content of the network. It is usually a problem for many webmasters who do things well and are exposed to being copied by third parties and for Google to sanction them because they believe they are copying. Currently the experience tells me that Panda is in the core of Google, so it is no longer limited to spending 3 or 4 times a year, but continuously.
There are a number of tools such as Copyscape or Plagium that will help us avoid Panda. The first tool allows us to add a URL and will quickly tell us if there are other websites with the same text as ours. What this application will not tell us is who Google is considering the copy. However, if we have a penalty, we can start by removing this “duplicate” content.
Digital Marketing and SEO – Copyscape
Plagium does not work inserting the url but we insert the piece of text that we want to check if it is being used in the network and will soon tell us if it has been copied. It offers good results but it is not 100% reliable.

Penalties for creating artificial links
- Penguin, better known in Spain as “the penguin”, is another Google algorithm that is responsible for finding fraudulent links or spam. Penalize sites that try to manipulate the Google ranking by creating artificial links. This year has delayed his visit and some experts talk about the insertion in Google’s algorithm, which would multiply his appearances exponentially. We were talking about it in the article. Has Penguin arrived? Are you sure it’s a Penguin?
In this article we are not going to try to find solutions to algorithmic sanctions since much has already been written on this subject. For this reason we are not going to explain the indicators that can help to identify a sanctioned web, since the manual sanctions, to which we are going to dedicate today, are always warned in Search Console (former Webmaster Tools).
Is a manual penalty worse?
Unlike many SEO I do not think that manual sanctions are the most difficult to recover because they present some clear advantages in relation to algorithms:
1- They warn in the section of Search Console – WEB TRAFFIC – MANUAL ACTIONS. In addition, an email arrives if you have the property registered in Search Console warning of the penalty.
2- It gives you the option to request a reconsideration, while in the case of algorithmic sanctions we will have to wait for Google to go through our page to verify that we have solved our problem (assuming we know what it is and we have solved it) .
Formerly it was thought that these sanctions were more complicated to solve by the simple fact that it was dealing with a person and not with a machine, but time has shown that we are not talking about 100% manual sanctions.Penalty for content with little added value
We find the slightest penalty (in my opinion), which is what says that our site has “content with little or no added value”. This sanction usually refers only to the content, so I say it is easier to resolve than one that has to do with inbound or outbound links. If you find any sanction of this type it is advisable to use the tools of Copyscape and Plagium mentioned above.

Penalty for artificial or fraudulent links
The penalty for “artificial or fraudulent links” warns us that our site may have an excess of outgoing or incoming links, I have found cases of both types. It is usually a typical penalty for sites that sell outbound links. I believe that some newspaper of great national circulation has been seen in some sanction of this type …
Penalty for spam and pure spam
Sanction for “spam” and sanction for “pure spam”. They differ in the seriousness of the situation. Obviously “pure spam” is more serious than just “spam”, but in the end the problem is the same, we have an excess of links that Google believes they have created in a massive way to spam our money site.

Sanction per page door
The “sanction by door page” is the one that most affects the SEO that Black Hat does, since they are sites created to obtain good results in Google because of dark linking techniques. They are usually webs that redirect others so that the owner of the domain obtains a benefit by affiliation or by advertising.
Have you ever entered a website that talks about a product, offers a comparator and finally ends with a link to Amazon? Here is an example of a door page.
Sanction purchase-sale of links
The sanction for “purchase-sale of links” is similar to the one that refers to “creation of artificial links”, with the difference that in this Google has discovered that there is an economic exchange, rather than a strategy of own Linkbuilding. Really sometimes Google is wrong with this type of sanctions and penalizes sites that are of the same person, accusing him of “transferring money”. In any case, it is a serious sanction.
Will we see big media such as El País, El Mundo, …, by buying and selling links?
Penalty for deceptive redirects on mobile
This sanction corresponds to the update of the article of September 2016. This type of sanction is typical of sites that are accessed thinking that you enter a subdomain and you are actually redirected to another website or another section of the page. In general Google sanctions these pages when a redirection occurs that the user of the web has not requested.
Very typical of sports betting websites or pages with links to watch free online matches. All these websites run the risk of being sanctioned by Google. It is considered a serious sanction.
How do I comply with the webmaster guidelines?
It is possible that after reading the webmaster guidelines you do not understand what you have to do to rescue your website. It is normal, Google drops things but does not want to expressly put what it is looking for not to make it easy for those who do Black Hat and are always in line with the forbidden.
Solutions before a sanction
To comply with the guidelines for webmasters the first thing we have to know is what we were doing wrong to be able to solve it. In this sense we will find two different solutions depending on whether we have a sanction for “spam or artificial links” or if on the contrary it is simply a penalty of “little added value”.
Solution for a penalty for spam or pure spam
1- In the case of being a sanction for spam we must make a complete disavow of our website, that is, a disavowal of links that is made from Search Console. With this measure we will clean our website of links, something that will affect our ranking, but unless we have very clear what are the negative links that point to our website, it is best to perform a thorough cleaning. We can try to put back the links once the reconsideration is accepted …

Solution for a penalty for little added value
2- If we are facing a penalty that says “little added value” we must check that the content of our website is not copied by third parties, it must be 100% original. For this we will use the tools that I mentioned above of Copyescape and Plagium and if we find something, we should remove it as soon as possible.
Once we have made sure to have the duplicate or copied content page clean, we must do the most important thing; a change in web design that includes sections such as:
Services we offer (in the case of being a company)
